Wildfire-related emissions of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the United States totaled 1.3 million tons in 2023. While this was a notable decrease when compared to 2021, PM2.5 emissions in 2023 were still the joint third-highest on record. On June 7 of that year, smoke from wildfires exposed the average American to PM2.5 concentrations of almost 30 μg/m³.
