The power industry was the biggest contributor to India's carbon dioxide emissions in 2022, having released 1.26 billion metric tons (GtCO₂). Emissions from India's power industry have almost tripled since 2000. Transportation emissions in India have also increased three-fold since 2000, and reached a high of 308 GtCO₂ in 2019, before plummeting the following year due to COVID-19-related restrictions. Although emissions from transportation have rebounded since then, they remained below pre-pandemic levels in 2022.
