Number of museum visitors in Germany 2015-2020, by museum type
Attendance at museums in Germany fell dramatically in 2020 over the previous year due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In the first year of the health crisis, museums and similar cultural institutions had to close to the public for months as the country enforced emergency measures to limit the spread of the virus. As a result of the closures, art galleries in Germany reported around 8.6 million visitors in 2020, after welcoming nearly 20 million people in 2019. Over the same period, attendance at historical and archaeological museums declined by approximately 14 million.
