South Africa's power sector had one of the highest carbon intensities worldwide in 2022, at 708.99 grams of carbon dioxide per kilowatt-hour (gCO₂/kWh). South Africa's high carbon intensity is due to the country's dependence on coal as an energy. This is similar to countries such as Indonesia, India, and China, where coal is the primary source of electricity generation. By comparison, Sweden, whose energy supply is dominated by hydropower, nuclear, and wind power, emitted just 45.08 gCO₂/kWh in 2022.
