Among the surfers admitted to the emergency services of the Pyrenees-Atlantic hospitals in 2019, more than half had a head or neck injury. Injuries to the upper and lower limbs accounted for nearly half of the recorded injuries.
Note that the beaches located between Hendaye and Souston are particularly popular with French and European surfers. Numerous professional competitions take place on these beaches such as the Quicksilver Pro, a top competition counting for the World surf league championship.
