Total gross greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. 1990-2022
In 2022, total gross greenhouse gas emissions in the United States were 6.34 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂e). Although this was the second consecutive year that U.S. GHG emissions increased, they remained below pre-COVID 19 levels.
The U.S. has set the target of achieving a 50 to 52 percent reduction in economy-wide emissions by 2030, relative to 2005 levels. As of 2022, gross GHG emissions were 15.4 percent lower than they were in 2005.
