International arrivals in tourist accommodation in Milan 2010-2022

The number of international tourist arrivals in Milan's accommodation establishments rebounded in 2022, after falling dramatically with the onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Despite the sharp annual increase, inbound tourist arrivals in the Italian city remained below pre-pandemic levels, reaching nearly 3.5 million in 2022.

International tourism in Milan by month

As the Italian government imposed a national lockdown between March and May 2020 to slow down the spread of the virus, monthly international arrivals in Milan fell dramatically during this period when compared to the same months of 2019. While U.S. travelers reported the highest figure in 2019, this scenario changed significantly in 2020. For instance, the number of U.S. tourist overnight stays in Milan reached around one thousand in June 2020, whereas it peaked at over 103 thousand in the same month of the previous year.

Average spending of international tourists in Milan

The average per capita expenditure of international tourists in Milan slightly decreased from 2016 to 2018. This figure went from 435.5 euros in 2016 to 389.4 euros in 2018. Meanwhile, the average leisure spending of international visitors experienced a decreasing trend over the same period.
