Share of emergency admissions for social or mental reasons in Belgium, by region 2016
In Belgium, the share of admissions in emergency services for social, mental, or psychic reasons were rather similar from one region to another. In 2016, around 1,56 percent of emergency admissions were under social or psychological motives. Although regional differences were minimal, the lowest share was found in Wallonia, while the highest was registered in Flanders. The use of emergency services for mental or social motives is considered to be an indicator of poorly coordinated health care and lack of health services on a community level. Indeed, if people had access to outpatient treatment before reaching a crisis, emergency services would not be used as the ultimate solution.
