South Africa had 10 UNESCO World Heritage sites, including, for instance, the Maloti-Drakensberg Park, and Robben Island, where the country's former president Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. South Africa housed the largest number of places in Africa declared as world heritage. Morocco and Ethiopia followed, each with nine sites.
