International tourism receipts in France increased significantly in 2023 compared to the previous year, recovering from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. After falling to under 33 billion U.S. dollars with the onset of the health crisis, inbound tourism receipts in France rebounded in the following years, amounting to roughly 68.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2023.
The importance of inbound tourism in France
Inbound tourism plays an important role in the travel market in France. Both before and after the impact of the pandemic, the European destination took the top spot in the ranking of countries with the highest number of inbound tourist arrivals worldwide. Overall, the number of international tourist arrivals in France exceeded 79 million in 2022. This figure, however, did not catch up with the peak in travelers recorded in 2019.
The economic contribution of travel and tourism in France
In 2022, the total contribution of travel and tourism to France's GDP surpassed 216 billion euros. While this figure was approximately 1.4 percent lower than in 2019, it showed a strong sign of recovery from the impact of the health crisis. Similarly, travel and tourism's total contribution to employment in France nearly reached pre-pandemic levels in 2022.
