Remaining global carbon budget for 1.5C 1850-2023, by select year
By the end of 1990, 50 percent of the global carbon budget to keep warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius compared with pre-industrial levels had been used up. Since then, rising emissions have caused an accelerating depletion of the carbon budget, with just 10 percent remaining by the end of 2022. Global CO₂ emissions are projected to have reached record levels in 2023, leaving around 7.5 percent of the carbon budget left. If CO₂ emissions continue at current levels, the remaining budget will be used up within five years.
