In March 2024, the Biden administration announced new regulations on tailpipe emissions. Though not as strict as originally proposed, the final rules will require automakers to cap average light-duty fleet emissions at 85 grams of carbon dioxide per mile (gCO₂/mi) in 2032 — down roughly 50 percent from emission standards for model year 2027.
