Greenhouse gas emissions in the United Kingdom 1990-2023, by sector
Transportation was the largest contributor to UK greenhouse gas emissions in 2023. That year, mobility on land, sea, and air released 112 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) into the atmosphere. This was more than double the emissions produced by the country's electricity supply sector. The electricity supply sector was once the largest contributor to UK GHG emissions, but a shift away from coal-fired power and a transition to renewable energy sources have seen emissions from this sector fall by almost 80 percent since 1990.
