Netherlands: Forecast population non-Western background by origin 2015-2060

This statistic shows a forecast of the population with a non-Western background in the Netherlands from 2015 to 2060, by origin (in thousands). It reveals that the population of Indonesian origin is expected to decline relatively rapidly, from 369,000 in 2015 to 172,000 in 2060. The population of Netherlands Antilles' origin on the other hand is expected to increase relatively rapidly, from 149,000 in 2015 to 246,000 in 2060. Furthermore, the population of Moroccan, Surinamese and Turkish origin are expected to increase first, and decline at a later point. For the Turkish population this tipping point lies in 2050, when the Turkish population is for the first time predicted to decrease. For the populations of Moroccan and Surinamese descent this tipping point is reached in 2055 (Moroccan) and 2040 (Surinamese) respectively.

Persons with a non-Western background: someone who has at least one parent born abroad outside Europe (excluding Turkey), North America, Oceania, Indonesia or Japan. Because of their socioeconomic and cultural background people from Indonesia and Japan are also considered Western. All others are considered non-Western.

First generation migrants have as country of origin the country where he/she was born. Second generation migrants have as country of origin the mother's country of birth, unless that is the Netherlands. In that case the country of origin is the father's country of birth.
