Passenger revenue of JR East in Japan in FY 2022, by rail network
In the fiscal year 2022, East Japan Railways Company (JR East) generated revenue of approximately 956.3 billion Japanese yen through passenger railway transportation on conventional lines in the Kanto region, which includes Tokyo and its surroundings. Throughout the service area, revenue from passengers transported via high-speed trains called Shinkansen added up to nearly 422 billion Japanese yen. With its tracks spanning more than eight thousand kilometers, JR East is the leading railway operator in the northern region of the main island called Honshu. The company was incorporated after breaking up the state-owned Japanese National Railways (JNR) in the 1980s and was fully privatized in 2002.
