Many different sources are responsible for air pollutant emissions across the United States. Transportation accounted for 48 percent of U.S. nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions in 2023, whereas industrial and other processes emitted the largest share of volatile organic compound (VOC), at about 74 percent. Stationary fuel combustion sources – such as power plants – were the primary sources of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) emissions by far.
