Transportation sector GHG emissions projections in the EU-27 1990-2040, by scenario
European Union transportation sector greenhouse gas emissions increased by 24 percent between 1990 and 2019, before plummeting 14 percent in 2020 due to a dramatic reduction in transport activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Preliminary estimates indicate that emissions rebounded in 2021, and increased a further 2.6 percent in 2022 to 803 MtCO₂e.
Projections show that EU transportation sector emissions would remain four percent above 1990 levels by 2030, with existing measures (WEM). With additional measures (WAM), emissions wouldn't drop below 1990 levels until 2029.
