The NPL ratio measures the share of loans by a bank which have been past due for a certain period. In the EU, the NPL ratio decreased significantly between 2016 and 2022. The Netherlands and Belgium followed this trend to a lower extent, as their ratios were lower than for the EU. A large part of the private debt in the Netherlands is comprised of mortgages. During the past decade, the total mortgage debt from households in the Netherlands have increased at a fast pace.
