Is the U.S. banking sector stable?
The share of non-performing loans held by U.S. banks decreased steadily since the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis. Further, as of the first quarter of 2023, all four of the largest U.S. banks (Wells Fargo, JP Morgan Chase, Banks of America, and Citigroup) had a common equity tier 1 capital ratio well above the minimum requirement of 4.5 percent imposed under the Basel-III agreement. Measuring banks’ core capital relative to their risk-weighted assets, the CET-1 capital ratio addresses the resilience of a financial institution.
Digital banking in the U.S.
Nowadays, traditional banking services can be provided digitally, substituting banks’ physical presence with a cheaper online support. As a consequence, the number of bank branches in the United States decreased since 2009. The share of U.S. consumers relying on digital banking has increased steadily over time, in particular during the coronavirus pandemic.
