largest carbon budget overshooting country worldwide.
As of 2023, the United States had a remaining carbon budget of about 16 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (GtCO₂), in order to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Nevertheless, emissions from hydrocarbons remaining in planned and active fields would outdo the North American country's carbon budget by nearly five-fold – with gas and oil emissions amounting to some 41 and 34 GtCO₂, respectively. The United States is by far the Share of remaining carbon budget and emissions from hydrocarbons remaining in planned and active fields in the United States as of 2023 (in billion tons of carbon dioxide)
