In 2022, 113 ships were recycled in the Aliağa port of Turkey. Over this period, the number of vessels broken apart in the Turkish port overall decreased with some oscillation. The highest figure was registered in 2011 at 341 ships. Turkey is one of the leading shipbreaking countries due to its geographical location, international standards, and qualified labor force. However, without strict regulations, vessel recycling is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world because of the hazardous materials ships contain, such as asbestos and heavy metals.
