U.S. distribution of votes cast in elections 2000-2022, by method
From 2000 to 2022, the share of votes cast by mail in elections in the United States has increased, while the number of people voting in person on election day has decreased. In the 2022 midterm elections, 49.5 percent of voters voted in person on election day, while almost 32 percent of voters voted by mail. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 presidential election was the only year that the share of votes cast by mail exceeded the share of in-person votes cast on Election Day.
