IMO's sulfur cap in January 2020. Vessel scrubbers are employed to remove nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), and other air pollutants from exhaust gases generated by engines.
Installations of scrubbing systems on ships picked up pace in the second half of 2019 and peaked in January 2020, when ships with a combined capacity of around 33.3 million dead-weight tons were fitted with scrubbers worldwide. This was due to the implementation of the Monthly capacity of ships fitted with scrubbing systems worldwide from January 2019 to March 2021 (in million dead-weight tons)
