Triennial debit card penetration in Germany 2011-2024, by demographic
According to a three-year survey, more than nine out of 10 respondents from Germany owned a debit card in 2021 with 84 percent actually having used one. The difference between ownership and usage was roughly 10 percentage points in 2021, a slight increase from a difference of nine percentage points in 2017. The report adds that men were more likely than women to own such a payment card in the European country. Gen Z - or the age group 15 to 24 years in this survey - was significantly more likely to own a debit card than their older counterparts.
