Largest U.S. natural gas producers based on production volume Q3 2023
EQT Corporation is the largest producer of natural gas in the United States. In the third quarter of 2023, the Pennsylvania-based producer reported a production output of some 5.3 billion cubic feet per day. Of the five leading producers, only Chevron was considered an oil and gas supermajor or "Big Oil" company.
Most productive U.S. shale play
EQT Corporation is primarily active in the Marcellus shale play, the most productive U.S. shale play. The Marcellus play belongs to the Appalachian basin and yields around 10 trillion cubic feet of shale gas every year.
The role of shale in U.S. natural gas production
The U.S. relies on shale (uncoventional) for a large part of its natural gas output. In 2022, around 27 trillion cubic feet of unconventional oil and gas had been produced in the country.
