Also known as liquor, spirits are a type of alcoholic beverage manufactured through distillation. Spirits characteristically have an alcohol content of 20 percent or greater, which can be significantly more than other fermented alcoholic beverages, such as wine and beer. Some of the strongest spirits available include vodka, absinthe and rum, which can exceed 90 percent alcohol by volume. In Canada, the spirits market is forecast to exceed 6.6 billion Canadian dollars in 2019.
Canada is known for its production of Canadian whisky. The most notable brand is Canadian Club, which is currently manufactured by Beam Suntory, an American subsidiary of Japanese based Suntory Holdings Limited. In 2019, approximately 278 million Canadian dollars of whisky was exported from Canada. The leading countries of destination of these exports were the United States, Japan and Australia.
Spirits sales generated approximately 5.26 billion Canadian dollars in 2017, with more than 50 percent of these sales coming from Canadian products. The largest sale volume of spirits were from provinces Ontario and Alberta, which sold an accumulated 90.22 million liters. The leading type of spirit sold in British Columbia was Vodka.
