Sales volume of beer in Denmark 2010-2022
Alcohol law in Denmark
In Denmark it is possible to buy alcoholic beverages in many convenience stores and supermarkets. The age limit for buying wine and beer in stores is 16 years and in restaurants and other serving places 18 years. In contrast, buying alcoholic beverages of 16.5 percent and higher is only legal for individuals aged 18 years and older. Among the other Nordic countries, Denmark is having lower restrictions of alcoholic beverage sales. In Sweden for example, beverages with an alcohol content higher than 3.5 percent are only allowed to be sold by Systembolaget, a government-owned chain of liquor stores. Same applies for Norway, beverages containing an alcohol content higher than 4.75 percent are only allowed to be sold by Vinmonopolet, which is the government-owned alcoholic beverage retailer.
Danish breweries
The number of active beer breweries in Denmark is growing. The market is dominated by the Danish brewing group Carlsberg, which is one of the leading beer brewing groups worldwide. Besides the Carlsberg beer, they also brew Tuborg, Kronenbourg, Somersby cider, Baltika beer, Grimbergen abbey beers and many other local beers.
