Domestic overnight traveler expenditure in Japan 2013-2022
Domestic travels in Japan
The value of tourism expenditure by domestic travelers remained steadily at over 20 trillion yen in recent years prior to the pandemic, with overnight trips accounting for the lion’s share of domestic tourism expenditure in Japan. While same-day trips were popular during short holidays, the industry received boosts by high travel activities which entailed overnight stays during consecutive public holidays, such as during the Golden Week.
The week-long holiday starting at the end of April and running until the beginning of May was considered a popular opportunity among the working population in Japan to spend time with the family and go on leisure trips.
Tourism in Japan
Japan has a vigorous tourism industry, fed by an increasing number of inbound visitors in the last decade prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many inbound visitors come from neighboring countries and regions, such as China, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Nonetheless, inbound tourism remains overshadowed by the prominence of domestic tourism in Japan, with spending of foreign visitors contributing only one fifth to the gross domestic product.
