Annual deaths attributable to PM2.5 exposure in the European Union 2005-2021
The estimated number of premature deaths in the European Union attributable to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure in 2021 was 253,305. This shows a reduction of roughly 41 percent compared to those observed in 2005. The EU aims to reduce the number of PM2.5 linked deaths by 55 percent from 2005 levels by 2030, under the Zero Pollution Action Plan.
