Main causes of migrants' deaths in the Mediterranean Sea 2022

In 2022, 2,222 people presumably drowned in the Mediterranean Sea trying to reach Europe. Moreover, six migrants who lost their lives while crossing the Mediterranean Sea died because of sickness.
The Mediterranean Sea registered worldwide the largest number of deaths of migrants. The Central Mediterranean Route counts the highest number of fatalities among the different Mediterranean routes. This route includes the crossing from North Africa to Italy as well as to Malta.
