Projected total CO₂ emissions worldwide in the net zero scenario 2010-2050
Global total carbon dioxide emissions increased by roughly one percent in 2022 to reach 36.9 billion metric tons (GtCO₂). Under the IEA's Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2050 scenario, total CO₂ emissions could fall to approximately 6.5 GtCO₂ by 2040, before reaching net-zero by 2050. Under the NZE scenario, wind and solar PV, together with increased electrification, would account for almost 50 percent of cumulative CO₂ reductions from 2022 through to 2050.
