Number of domestic transport passengers in Japan FY 2020, by mode

In the fiscal year 2020, the number of passengers carried via domestic railway transportation amounted to over 25 billion, while passenger ships had only about 80 thousand passengers. Railroad transport is Japan's major mass transit system, encompassing local systems like trams and high-speed railway lines for long-distance travel, such as the Japanese bullet train, also known as Shinkansen.
