Number of inbound tourist arrivals in the Netherlands 2012-2022

The number of international tourist arrivals in travel accommodation establishments in the Netherlands increased sharply in 2022 compared to the first two years of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Despite the significant annual increase, the number of inbound guests remained below pre-pandemic levels, reaching around 16.1 million in 2022.

The economic impact of travel and tourism in the Netherlands

In 2022, travel and tourism's total contribution to gross domestic product in the Netherlands amounted to nearly 87 billion euros. This figure, however, did not catch up yet with the total contribution reported in 2019, prior to the health crisis. Over the same period, the total contribution of travel and tourism to employment in the Netherlands dropped by roughly seven percent.  

Tourism in Amsterdam

Amsterdam plays a key role in the Netherlands' tourism market. As forecast, travel and tourism's direct contribution to GDP in Amsterdam was estimated to exceed seven billion euros in 2022. That year, the number of tourist arrivals in Amsterdam's hotels totaled nearly seven million, with Germany representing the leading inbound tourist market for the city.
