In 2022, non-Hispanic Black women had the highest rates of maternal mortality among select races/ethnicities in the United States with 49.5 deaths per 100,000 live births. The total maternal mortality rate in the U.S. at that time was 22.3 per 100,000 live births, a decrease from a rate of almost 33 in 2021. A maternal death is defined by the World Health Organization as, “the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and the site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management, but not from accidental or incidental causes."
