Share of media used as the main news source in Finland 2023

According to a 2023 survey, the internet remained the main news source for most Finns. The second most popular source of news was television, named by 33 percent of respondents. Other sources, such as printed media and radio, were used by less than ten percent of them as the main news source.

Websites and apps of newspapers are the most used news source

Although older age groups mainly followed the news on the television, Finnish people aged 54 years and younger increasingly used the internet as their main news source. Correspondingly, websites and apps of newspapers narrowly surpassed television as the most used source of news in 2022. In addition to news websites, the use of radio news broadcasts to follow the news became more popular among Finns between 2021 and 2022.

Finns trust traditional outlets for coronavirus news

In April 2020, television news and newspapers were considered as the most trusted sources to provide accurate information on the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Around 70 percent of Finns said that they kept themselves updated on the impacts of COVID-19 by following television news. When asked about the public broadcaster’s (Yle) response to the COVID-19 outbreak, almost 90 percent had a positive opinion about the way Yle had handled the situation as of March 2020.
