Total assets of the banking industry in Germany 2003-2023
The German banking industry reported 10.8 trillion euros in total assets in 2023, up from 10.58 trillion euros from the previous year. The value of total assets in 2023 was the highest value reported during the whole period, above the previously highest values, which were the years between the Financial Crisis and the peak of the Sovereign Debt Crisis. The high values during this period, suggesting that German banks were viewed as relatively safe during this period.

At the beginning of 2019, the merger of Deutsche Bank with Commercial Bank was discussed, but eventually no agreement was reached.
