Amount of hidden ads on social media South Korea 2021, by social media platform
Between April and December of 2021, just over 17 thousand hidden ads were uncovered on three major social media platforms in South Korea. The largest share of them, at over 9.5 thousand, were found on Instagram. Social media ads must be clearly and visibly marked as such, so that consumers are aware that the poster is benefitting from recommending a product. Failure to do so sufficiently is regarded as hidden advertising, in which it appears that a poster is merely giving a recommendation based on personal experience with no economic benefit for doing so.
