Number of tourists arriving in South Africa from 2011 to 2022, by mode of travel
The number of tourists arriving in South Africa amounted to almost 5.7 million in 2022. Of those, the majority entered the country via road, adding up to over 3.8 million. This represented close to 68 percent of the total arrivals. Arrivals by air followed with around 1.8 thousand visitors. On the other hand, there were only six tourists who entered the country by sea. Notably, the number of travelers since 2020 have experienced a major decline compared to previous years due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic's negative impact on travel.
