Foreign tourism visitor spending in South Africa 2009-2021
In 2021, international tourist spending in South Africa dropped to 1.9 billion U.S. dollars, which represented some 1.5 percent of the country's total exports. Foreign tourist spending declined sharply as a result of travel restrictions in light of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In 2019, the amount spent by tourists visiting South Africa amounted to 9.8 billion U.S. dollars.
