Distribution of seafood exports from Norway 2018, by type of fish
Salmon exports
Atlantic salmon is the most farmed fish in Norway; the country is the largest producer of salmon worldwide. Therefore, the export value of salmon from Norway grew strongly, amounting to more than 64 billion Norwegian kroner in 2017.
Imports of fish and seafood
Norway’s fish industry can export most of its fish and seafood products and still cover the country’s own consumption by domestic supply. However, the imports into Norway has been growing in recent years, and the reason might be that there is a strong need to import especially fishmeal, fish oil and fish feed for the aquaculture industry. In 2016, fishmeal with a value of around two billion Norwegian kroner was imported.
