Sales value of fresh primary meat and poultry United Kingdom (UK) 2017
Global meat industry
Globally, the market value of processed meat is expected to rise to over 1.5 trillion dollars by 2022. As of 2016, poultry and red meat were the two most popular types of processed meat with a 38 and a 33 percent share of the global market respectively.
Meat consumption in the UK
As of 2016, it was estimated that an average consumption of beef and veal per person per year was 18.4kg. Furthermore, the average weekly purchase per person decreased from 128 grams in 2016 to 102 grams in 2016/2017. The ongoing downward trend in the UK matches corresponding European Union (EU-28) forecasts of a decline of the beef and veal consumption volume. With health and climate concerns growing worldwide this trend is unlikely to reverse.
