Electric bike sales in Europe 2022, by country
The largest market for electric bicycles in Europe in 2022 was Germany, where 2.2 million new e-bikes were sold. France recorded the second-highest European sales, which was only about a third of the sales volume in Germany. Despite its significantly smaller population but with a strong cycling culture, the Netherlands is the third largest e-bike market.
German bike sales peaked during the pandemic bicycle boom
As did many other countries around the world, Germany saw a spike in bicycle sales during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, over five million bikes were sold in the country, around 39 percent of which were e-bikes. Bicycle sales fell to 4.6 million units in 2022, but despite this decrease, unit sales remained above those seen in the immediate pre-pandemic years and e-bikes now make up nearly half the bicycle market.
E-bikes now dominating the Dutch market
While the Dutch bicycle market is not as large as in neighboring Germany, e-bikes were adopted much more quickly in the country famous for its extensive bicycle infrastructure and love of cycling. E-bikes made up half of all bicycle sales for the first time in 2020 and their share in the market has grown to 57 percent since then.
