Conservative-DUP Deal

The staggering cost of May's DUP deal

UK Prime Minister Theresa May has agreed a £1.5 billion deal with the Democratic Unionist Party to prop up her minority Conservative government. That money could have paid for many policies the Tories claimed could not be funded without raising tax, according to a party document. They include nationalising Royal Mail, providing children with nursery access or training in 10,000 new police officers. As high as the financial cost of the deal is, it may also have a considerable political price. Under the Good Friday Agreement, the UK's government is required to remain impartial in Northern Ireland's peace process and May's deal will test that requirement to its limit.
