Europe's Biggest Cigarette Producers

Today marks "No Tobacco Day" around the world. In the European Union, cigarette production is falling with almost 300 billion fewer cigarettes produced in 2016 than a decade ago. Production fell by 36 billion alone between 2015 and 2016. However, 527 billion cigarettes were still produced in EU countries in 2016, equivalent to over 1,000 cigarettes per inhabitant or about 50 packs of 20 per inhabitant.

According to Eurostat who also recorded production figures in several neighboring non-EU countries, Germany accounts for the bulk of cigarette production in the EU. In 2016, it was the source of 168 billion cigarettes, or 32 percent of EU production. Poland was in second place with 19 percent of the total and about 99 billion. Romania rounded off the top three with 76.7 billion.
