How Much Will it Cost To Repair Notre Dame?

In the wake of the catastophic fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris last week, the amount of money pledged to repair the building has climbed to €750 million. While it has been difficult to put a precise figure on the cost of the work needed to restore the cathedral to its former glory, new estimates from French construction economists suggest that the amount donated will easily surpass the repair bill.

Untec - L'Union nationale des Économistes de la construction have estimated repair costs will reach a maximum level of €465 million. Up to €20 million is estimated to be required for securing Notre Dame and making it safe for restoration workers. That figure includes tarpaulin to keep the building safe from rain and safety nets to prevent accidents.

The costs for replacing the roof and framework are expected to be as high as €45 million while work on masonary consolidation and resoration could have a maximum bill of €400 million. The amount of money donated for the effort has proven controversial in some corners with critics arguing it could have been better spent elsewhere.
