The Hong Kong Protests by the Numbers

On Sunday, hundreds of thousands of people in Hong Kong hit the streets of the Chinese special administrative region to voice their opposition to Chinese influence on the city. The protests started almost two months ago, when a bill was proposed in the legislature that would make extradition to China possible.

While crowd estimates vary widely, protests might have reached their peak on July 1. 265,000 people alledegly came out to protest on that day, a number calculated with the help of crowd-counting AI. Yesterday's protests also drew a large crowd, which police said numbered 128,000. On July 1, police had put the number of protesters at 190,000.

Hong Kong police has said that they have arrested more than 700 people so far since June. At the beginning of August, they released numbers indicating that 1,800 canisters of tear gas, 300 rubber bullets and 170 sponge grenades have been used on the protesters, a number that has likely risen.
