Education Is a Major Driver of Personal AI Usage

Among AI tools’ many use cases, education and learning is one of the most popular ones. According to Statista Consumer Insights, education and learning is among the top 3 personal use cases of tools like ChatGPT in most of the countries surveyed. As our chart shows, educational use of AI tools is most widespread in Indonesia and India and less so in countries like Germany and the U.S. The differences displayed are more reflective of overall usage levels than of differences in types of usage, though, as learning and education is the second most popular use case in both the U.S. and Germany behind online research.

As powerful as AI tools are in the field of education, it will be important going forward to use them in the right way. As Andreas Schleicher, director for education and skills at the OECD, put it in his foreword to the latest PISA results: “Technology can be a powerful amplifier of learning, but only if students are equipped with the cognitive and metacognitive tools to use it wisely.” He calls for AI to be used as “a tool for thinking, not a substitute for it.”
