In 2021, 73 percent of Japan's imports of rare-earth were shipped in from China, representing the largest share of rare earth imports. The largest global deposits of rare earth are located in China. Japan depended on imports from overseas for most of its rare metals, which are essential to the production of lithium-ion batteries, motors and semiconductors for industries related to electrified vehicles and IoT devices.
