Japan: pre-owned residential properties by transaction 2023

In 2023, there were around 2.87 million existing residential properties newly offered for rent in Japan. About 1.4 million properties were offered for sale. The total number of existing properties newly offered for sale or rent increased by less than one percent compared to 2022.

The figures include property that has been registered on the Real Estate Information Network System (REINS), an online platform for information exchange on real estate designated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. Depending on the kind of mediation contract concluded with real estate agents, the registration of properties on REINS is mandatory.

Residential real estate includes apartments, detached houses, and land. The figures partly include non-residential properties.

Until 2019, figures include re-registrations for some regions (Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu).
