Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that traps 80 times more heat than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period and is a major contributor to climate change.
Satellites detected more than 1,000 human-caused methane-super emitter events worldwide in 2022. The top 15 emitters were responsible for 956 of these super-emitting events, with the most being detected in Turkmenistan - 184, all of which were from oil and gas fields. The majority of global methane leaks were from oil and gas fields, as well as coalmines and waste sites. Highest number of methane super-emitter events worldwide in 2022, by country and source
